A Brief History Of Lip Balm

Lip balm is a substance applied to the lips to moisturize them and relieve dry or chapped lips, cold sores, stomatitis and angular cheilitis. It’s commonly made of beeswax, carnauba wax, petroleum, paraffin, camphor, lanolin and cetyl alcohol. Some lip balms also contain sunscreens, flavors, dyes, fragrances, salicylic acid and phenol. Lip balm is primarily used to protect the lips from the drying effects of wind and cold temperature. Some people use homemade lip balms while others prefer commercial concoctions. Lip balms can be applied using a finger or a lipstick-type tube.

In the 1840s Lydia Maria Child recommended using beeswax to treat cracked lips in her popular book ‘The American Frugal Housewife’. She said that while some might laugh at the notion many have enjoyed beneficial results from the remedy. The first person to market lip balm commercially was Charles Browne Fleet in the 1880s. Since then brands like Blistex, Burt’s Bees, Carmex, ChapStick and Vaseline have become very popular.

The Evolution of Smooth is a very popular brand of lip balm. Founded in 2006, the company uses ingredients that are 95% organic, 100% natural and gluten, paraben, phthalate and petrolatum free. The lip balm contains antioxidant-rich vitamin E as well as soothing jojoba oil and shea butter. EOS lip balm makes the lips soft, moist and very smooth. EOS lip balm comes in a wide range of flavors. They include Pomegranate Raspberry, Summer Fruit, Strawberry Sorbet, Medicated Tangerine, Lemon Drop, Honeysuckle Honeydew, Sweet Mint and Blueberry Acai.

Some flavors of EOS lip balm are limited editions. Others are marketed in the United States only. Most EOS lip balm is sold in sphere-shaped containers. However, there are also some stick shaped lip balms. The new EOS Visibly Soft lip balms are only available in Coconut Milk and Vanilla Mint. EOS lip balm products are available on racked.com and Ulta online.
